GOVERNMENT RELATIONS
With our motto,
“Public policy for Native Americans by Native
Americans” NPG is your voice in the public
policy process.
While American Indians are significantly diverse in terms of
our nations’ cultures, languages, histories and governments,
we also face many shared common problems or issues that are
quite often misunderstood, mischaracterized or even misrepresented
by mainstream society.
Consequently, those in decision making roles often fail to fully
understand an issue simply because they act without seeking
genuine input from American Indians. As a result, American Indian
communities have experienced the harmful effects of intended
or unintended policies and laws.
LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS
NPG assists communities in the development of strategies including
developing positions, formulating coalition support and countering
any lobbying opposition.
To further a community's ability to achieve its legislative
objective, NPG maintains daily contact during the legislative
session with leaders in the executive and legislative branches
of state government, individual legislators, and other key individuals
as necessary for specific issues.
CLIENT NETWORKING
NPG uses its strong connections throughout the greater community
to optimize a community's ability to meet its legislative objective
by formulating coalition supports with other stakeholders.
Instituting policies, ordinances or regulations can be an overwhelming
task for a community. Therefore, it is better to work with other
stakeholders that share the same interest and concern.

ISSUES
MANAGEMENT
NPG assists communities by researching and articulating the issues
and designing alternative solutions.
Too often, a community spends more time describing its problems
to those in decision-making roles without providing them with
alternative solutions
MEDIA RELATIONS
NPG assists communities with basic press releases and works effectively
with the media.
It is important for a community to attract favorable media attention
to express its views. On the other hand, the media can also adversely
affect the outcome of a community's policy objective.
MONITORING AND REPORTING
NPG monitors and tracks all legislative activity on bills of interest.
On a timely basis, NPG informs its client of any important activity
relative to a bill’s movement in the legislative process.
Finally, NPG provides a weekly tracking list that identifies the
status of a bill or bills of interest.
Timing can be a major factor in the outcome of a legislative objective,
especially during the session. Therefore, a community needs to
stay informed about its legislative objectives.
TRAINING
NPG provides communities with training on how to educate and influence
decision-makers.
To impact public policy, it is important for a community to understand
how the legislative process works by knowing a set of processes,
procedures, structures and techniques.
